ABOUT PROF KAIRINOS
Prof Kairinos is a board-certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who completed his post-graduate training at the University of Cape Town. Although he always kept ties with the university as a sessional consultant, Prof Kairinos has been working full-time in private practice since 2011. In 2022, he took on the role of Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Stellenbosch. He continues a portion of his private practice, however, and operates in private practice once a week.
A large proportion of the reconstructive work he does in private practice is for skin cancer surgery. Prof Kairinos also undertakes a wide variety of cosmetic procedures, but he has a particular interest in post-bariatric body contouring surgery (skin removal after massive weight loss) and “mommy makeovers” (combined tummy-tuck and breast surgery following pregnancy). As a consequence of having been a sessional consultant at the Hand Surgery Unit, Groote Schuur Academic Hospital for 11 years prior to his new role, Prof Kairinos continues his interest in soft tissue surgery of the hand in private practice.
In addition to his other degrees, Prof Kairinos has the privilege of being the only South African to have been awarded a PhD in Plastic Surgery from UCT. This was for his multi-award winning research in the field of negative-pressure wound therapy. He is regarded as a key opinion leader in the field of complex wounds and serves as a reviewer for seven international peer-reviewed journals. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Wound Healing Southern Africa (WHSA) journal, the official journal of the Wound Healing Association of Southern Africa. He pioneered the Cape Advanced Wound Care Centre (CAWCC), South Africa’s first true multidisciplinary wound care centre.
Prof Kairinos is happily married and has two children. In his spare time, he thoroughly enjoys socialising with friends and family. He loves the outdoors, particularly camping, fishing, cycling and hiking. Prof Kairinos' hobbies include progressive work on numerous medical and non-medical inventions, some of which have been patented.
